What is Right and Wrong
I would like to share something about what is right and what is wrong which is mostly based on Hall's work. After reading it I took out some main point and summarize it Golden Law
Focus on inherent goodness or badness of one's action. All actions are to be say either ethical or unethical. This law applies equally to everyone, so what is right or wrong for one person will also be right or wrong to everyone else. People are encourage to do the ethical (e.g.,show gratitude, give aid) and discourage to do the unethical(e.g., do not steal, do not lie). Golden Purse
Focus on the one's power. Simply say, the one with the greatest power(wealth or physical strength or etc) will be the ruler. However this doesn't provide a stable foundation and may cause dissatisfaction on the non-rulers. Golden Consequence
Focus on the result of the act. The main focus is on why you did it and not how you did it. One can lie and still be right if the lie leads to a good deed. Robin Hood would be a good example for this. However no one can be really sure on what consequence will the act leads to. Golden Mean
Focus on the balance on one action. It can be trace back to Aristotle and Confucius who saw the right behavior as a blending of opposites. Courage is the golden mean for cowardice and foolishness. Thus, the ethical choice would the medium between two extremes Golden Rule
It's simple, what you want others to do to you is what you do to others. As Confucius once said "Do not do to others what you do not like others to do to you" |
